Washington, D.C. (as well as Maryland and Virginia) will figure prominently in political news tomorrow.
Which makes me realize that in this blog we haven’t mentioned one of the best basketball teams ever to play in the nation’s capitol.
The Washington Bears.
The Bears won the 1943 World Professional Basketball Tournament.
There’s a ton of material to cover about the Bears, so I can’t cover it all in one post.
But to get us started, here’s an excerpt from the event program of that 1943 Pro Tournament.
I’ll get into more detail about the Bears later this week and throughout the upcoming basketball tournament season.
Our friends at the D.C. Basketball Blog are also inspiring me in this direction.
Speaking of Virginia, the Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation’s annual Black History Celebration Celebrity Basketball Game (featuring the Harlem Magic Masters vs. Falls Church All Stars) will take place in Falls Church on February 29, 2008 at 6:00 p.m.
The Magic Masters have featured guest appearances by famed streetballers like JFK, Bobbito, and Pat Da Roc (whose website has to be seen).
I’ll be there and I hope to see you too.
Thanks Claude!
Also, before the game we hope to have a panel discussion with yourself, John Issacs, and one of the Washington Bears Team owners Hal Jackson. We are optimistic about reuniting John Issacs and Hal Jackson at this panel discussion. It promises to be a fun affair.
I am looking forward to learn more about the Washington Bears from your future blog submissions. I was hard pressed to find much onthe web about them when I googled the Washington Bears.
