My Adidas

People often ask me (i.e., my kids) why I always wear Nike or Converse basketball sneakers, and I explain that it’s because I like to promote the Black Fives brand that those two great companies have represented so well through their licensed Black Fives products.

But … those aren’t the only brands I’ve ever worn for basketball footwear.  I recall that during part of college, my favorite basketball kicks were tthe original Adidas Shelltoes.

Here’s evidence, below, from my college yearbook.  This was a group photo of the Carnegie Mellon University Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers, to which I belonged.

A close up view.  From what I remember, these were awesome on the court!

(Note that I’m also wearing my Concord-Carlisle High School Patriots football hoody, #81 of course, which was my number, not my “Class of”.)

Do you have any Shelltoe memories?

Thanks for letting me share this throwback moment!

  1. Loved shelltoes BITD, if one can love a sneak. Began rocking them anew circa 1995, when a return to pickup basketball led me to Turkey Thicket playground in D.C., and long summers on Martha’s Vineyard.

Concord-Carlisle! The Dual County League baby. My cousins attended Newton South.
