The State of Black Fives
by Claude Johnson

Please allow me to expand on the trendy "State of the Union" theme for a minute, if you don't mind. Many people ask, and I often ask myself, "Where we at?" In proper English, "What is our status?" Or, "Where are we relative to our original goals?" For that matter, "What are our goals?" More accurately even if improper would be, "Where I'm at?" That's more accurate because Black Fives still has just one employee, namely me.

Doing just about everything by myself worked for a long time without me realizing that I had no clear vision and that wasn't thinking big enough. Then one day I learned how to overcome my fear of success and my doubt about self-worth, obstacles I still work daily to overcome (more on that some other time). I learned how to think bigger. As a result, my vision got bigger, and naturally so did the opportunities not only for me but also for others. Now there are so many great opportunities that I am scared NOT to pursue them, but I cannot do it on my own. I need help. That is why I am actively seeking partners in all areas of my business.

I use the word "partners" on purpose and in the literal sense. Partners share in the profit. Partners build for themselves. Ideal partners would have their own visions for how to create opportunities and rewards. They would understand the powers of attraction and manifestation, that is, 1) why this Black Fives opportunity is for them, and 2) how to create something from nothing. These two points are so important, because ...

RENS ARE SPEEDY AS GAZELLES
AND DEADLY AS RIFLES

Colored World Champs of New York Are Fastest in Pro Game, Play All Stars Here Saturday
_____

Speedy as gazelles in cutting under the basket and deadly as high-powered rifles in their shooting, those are some of the things said about the New York Renaissance, world's colored professional basketball champions, who will open a five-game series with the OshKosh All Stars, Saturday evening at 8:30 o'clock at the Recreational gymnasium.

The series has been designated as for the championship of the world in the pro cage game, but whoever wins the title held is only mythical as no official crown is or can be awarded.

The Renaissance five claims the title, which they have held for several years and there are none who dispute their ownership of the crown. But the All Stars will dispute their right to retain it vigorously in the five games to be played.

Should the Oshkosh professional team come out on top in a majority of the games of the series they have stated they will feel justified in claiming the title based on their past record and on the fact that they have beaten the champions.

"TUNE UP" THURSDAY

To win from the Rens is the thing that must be accomplished and the All Stars are expected to bend every effort to achieve that point.

rens_1937

The entire squad will be here Thursday evening for a game with the Kellogg Seeds of Milwaukee as a final contest before the "world's series" to have everything "down pat." The Milwaukee team will give the Stars a good workout, having such players as Cy Rubado, captain at Marquette a year ago, and Adolph "Big Mitts" Gorychka, also of Marquette.

Led by genial but tricky "Fat" Jenkins, the Rens possess the same lineup which last year ran up a season record of 121 victories against 14 defeats. The same pair of giants, "Tarzan" Copper and "Wee Willie" Smith alternate at the pivot position.

The little speedster, Bill Yancey; the clown of the club, "Jack-Rabbit" Bethards, and "Bruiser" Saitch are again assigned to the guard positions while in the front court Jenkins shares the spotlight with Johnny Holt, who is the least spectacular of the sepian stars, but who is most important in the club's offense and defense.

Black Fives, Inc. is dedicated to researching, preserving, teaching, and promoting the history of early African American participation in the sport of basketball. The BLACK FIVES brand is a historically accurate, authentic collection of vintage, all-black basketball teams that pre-dated the NBA, playing in the antique era of sports from the 1910s through the late-1940s, when the NBA finally became integrated. The collection consists of trademarked and copyrighted team names, logos, uniform designs, player name and likeness usage rights, photograph usage rights, and related copyrighted materials.
