Why Black Fives?

I’m often asked, why Black Fives? Here’s why.

Black Fives as a brand, as a company, is all about taking history and making it relevant today.

Once it’s seen as relevant, people like you and me can then take important, timeless lessons from that past and apply them in our lives today, right now.

Claude is the founder and president of Black Fives, Inc.

This allows us to engage, teach, enlighten, and inspire ourselves and others in ways that change peoples’ lives.

As a result, something that was once considered boring by some, is now made meaningful.

Anything meaningful helps evolve the consciousness of the world.  Now we can do this, one moment at a time. All of us. In other words, we can make history now.

We feel so strongly about this outlook that we’ve adopted it as the company slogan:  “Make History Now.”

Yes, Black Fives, Inc. is also a business.  It’s a collection of vintage sports intellectual property having to do with the basketball teams of the Black Fives Era.  We have revenues, obligations, strategic goals, and an advisory board, as well as a charitable component.

Black Fives, Inc. researches, preserves, promotes, and teaches the history of African American participation in basketball, with focus on the many all-black teams that played from the early 1900s through the late-1940s, prior to the racial integration of pro basketball, a period known as the Black Fives Era.

Through scholarly research, methodical archival preservation, trademark protection, and thoughtful promotion, our goal is to bring the teams of the Black Fives Era back to life.

These teams make up our basketball family tree.  Those players are our on-court ancestors. This is our history.

The past may put things in perspective and teach us new things about ourselves, but only if we’re conscious enough to appreciate it.

That consciousness begins here.

We strive for our research to be impeccable. We love, honor, and respect our early basketball forbears, and we hope this passion shows up in our work.

Research and preservation of this history is vital to us, but we don’t want the stories to end with just the storytelling. Therefore, we have gone to great lengths to protect the intellectual property associated with the Black Fives Era, through trademark registration and other means.

Yet, although our company might own the trademarks for our Black Fives Era teams, we do not own the history. The history is all of ours, to share and pass on.

I’m proud to be involved in such a worthwhile effort, and I hope that you become proud too, the minute you learn about Black Fives.

Thank you for your interest!

Sincerely,

Claude Johnson
