Today I heard from a friend of his, that George Crowe called to say he “feels he is dying.” Crowe is the last living former New York (Harlem) Rens player.

This was part of the evolutionary process of basketball and it’s how many players made a decent living — it wasn’t much, and it wasn’t the big time, but at least they were playing the game they loved to play.

Henry “Hank” DeZonie, who was a star basketball player with the Harlem Yankees, New York Renaissance, Dayton Rens of the National Basketball League, and Tri-Cities Blackhawks of the National Basketball Association, died January 2, 2009, at Lenox Hill Hospital in Harlem. He would have been 87 years old yesterday.

Did you know that Jackie Robinson was much better at basketball than he was at baseball? In fact he may have been the finest basketball player of his time. Robinson was so good on the court that in 1946 he played for a little known racially integrated professional basketball team called the Los Angeles Red Devils.
